To legally operate a drone in California for commercial purposes, you need to obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This certificate is also known as the Part 107 certification. To qualify for the license, you must be at least 16 years old, speak and understand English, and be in a physical and mental condition to safely operate a drone.
1. Study: Prepare for the FAA Knowledge Test by studying aeronautical charts, regulations, weather effects, and more.
2. Schedule and Pass the Test: Schedule your test at an authorized testing center and pass with a score of at least 70%.
3. Complete TSA Background Check: After passing the exam, complete a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check.
4. Receive Your License: Once you have passed the test and background check, you will receive your Remote Pilot Certificate.
Your drone pilot license is valid for two years. To renew your license, you must pass a recurrent knowledge test before the expiration date of your current license.
After obtaining your drone pilot license, you must abide by the Part 107 rules set by the FAA. These include regulations on airspace, flying at or below 400 feet, keeping the drone in sight, and not flying over people.
